Medina of Marrakech
First of all, this Medina of Marrakech is very large and encompasses Jemaa el-Fnaa, Bahia Palace and the narrow streets with markets all over and so much more. Moreover, this is where you will find Madrasa Ben Youssef, the most famous square in all of Morocco, the busy souks, the beautiful Koutoubia Mosque, Mellah, Souk Semmarine and snake charmers. Is it worth doing a guided tour?
Marrakech Guided City Tour
Jemaa el-Fnaa is a square and marketplace in Marrakech’s medina quarter (old city). In other words, it remains the main square of Marrakech, used by locals and tourists. So, this is one of the most famous places in Marrakech. At night, there are all kinds of street food served at many stalls. There are many performances and animal shows in the plaza. The fresh squeezed juice is very delicious although some vendors mix sugar or ready-made juice.
The Medina of Marrakech is one for the bucket list, it covers a huge area, at its heart is the Djemaa El Fna. Full of hustle & bustle and selling genuine antiques to tourist crap and many things in-between. The sights and smells are a wonder to behold. So, it is worth a guided city tour.
The Medina of Marrakech is an amazing cultural experience. From the moment you arrive, there is an overwhelming sense of something different. Whether it is the drums being played with the pipes to charm the snakes, the colourful displays on show, or the sheer range of different stalls to visit, this is not to be missed. So, it is worth going into the shops to haggle over price, and enjoy every minute of it.
Bahia Palace in Marrakech
Bahia Palace is one of the ‘must sees’ of Marrakesh. It is not a very old palace though. It was finished in 1900. There are beautiful chambers with intricate wall decorations and beautiful ceilings. The palace has impressive geometric designs typical of beautiful buildings. The architecture is stunning and its Moroccan design is notable. The palace was used by the Sultan and his family in the late 19th century.
The palace walls are decorated with Arabic inscriptions and geometric patterns and flowers. The ceilings are made of cedar-wood and painted with colourful floral patterns. The Bahia Palace is a true gem Medina of Marrakech, with its intricate architecture, stunning courtyards, and rich history that goes back to the 19th century, transporting you to another era. A must-visit for anyone seeking beauty and cultural immersion in Morocco.
This is one of the best attractions to see in Marrakesh and it is top visited by tourists inside Medina of Marakech. Beautiful doors and gate at Bahia Palace.
Mellah of Marrakesh – Spice Market
The Jewish Mellah of Marrakech was built in 1558. They were business people and trading the sugar, banking, metal, clothing and jewellery. This district has distinct architecture like tall outward looking houses with balconies, enclosed alleys and tiny shops. As well as, you can still see synagogues too.
Visiting the Mellah of Marrakech is interesting if you have a knowledge of the Jewish history of Morocco. However, it is difficult to find and you will probably need to ask for directions, as it is hidden in a narrow alley. In addition to the synagogue ( which is active and services are held), there are a number of small classrooms with many photos.
This district has distinct architecture like tall outward looking houses with balconies, enclosed alleys and tiny shops. You can still see some quaint synagogues, small gardens and fountains here. You will find very few Jews living here nowadays but you can still see some glimpses of Judaic life here. There are the Hebraic jewellery and tailor shops.
Souk Semmarine – Marrakech Guided City Tour
Souk Semmarine is the biggest souk in Marrakech and it completely fulfills what you imagine as an ‘open market’ in Morocco. Everything you can imagine from local craft is here. From olives to shoes to silver to instruments to snake charmers.
Souk Semmarine starts with poetry and brass or metal shops but as it goes along it becomes more textile, cloths and at the end mostly leather products such as jacket, hand back, shoes and sandals. It is a great place for shopping.
There were great shopping deals and definitely bargains with the vendors who will usually come down in price. This wonderful location is filled with fascinating crevices. Small businesses and some craftsmen are producing their goods. Of course you are fair game if you pause to look. It might be difficult to pull yourself away from the vendors who are so eager to close a deal since it is so simple to become lost.
Madrasa Ben Youssef
Ben Youssef Madrasa started about 600 years old, built as a religious school for Islamic studies. It also served as a mosque and a library. The Ben Youssef Madrasa was expanded in the 16th century and became the largest Islamic college in Marrakech city, which could accommodate roughly 800 students. It also has a beautiful courtyard and student dormitories on the ground and first floor. There is a small museum on the second floor. The Ben Youssef Madrasa is built with red sandstone and decorated with geometric patterns, colorful tiles and carved stucco. It’s the most beautiful monument in Marrakech and usually very busy.
